Genocide as a social act

The Holocaust was a continent-wide genocide, requiring the participation, collaboration or acquiescence of huge numbers of ordinary people. This short video outlines the teaching approaches and educational materials in 'Being Human?', a resource Paul created for UCL's Centre for Holocaust Education to explore these challenging issues.

It considers the potential of carefully chosen case studies to challenge common misconceptions about this complex past; to disrupt students' prior thinking about how and why the Holocaust was possible; and the implications this has for the continuing relevance of the Holocaust today.

The video is part of Paul’s contribution to a free online course, 'Teaching the Holocaust: Innovative approaches to the challenges we face', a MOOC offered jointly by UCL Centre for Holocaust Education and Yad Vashem.

Following a highly successful first run in the autumn term of 2020, with over 2,000 participants enrolled from 89 countries, the course will run again in 2021. Sign up here to find out more, register your interest, and receive an email when the course resumes.
